My first day on the DFI 2021 has been interesting and challenging. I learned something from every session that I can use, was able to share some of my knowledge and practised some new skills.
Most of our staff have completed the DFI, so it will be good for us to share our learning and things we would like to implement in teams or across the school.
I really liked that the focus is on 'working together changes a community'.
I will reinforce the five goals with my staff and we will reflect on how we do that within our context. They are really good to keep us focussed.
We know that LCS is about the pedagogy not the tech, but it is always good to have that reminder. Hearing about the focus on literacy and very limited tech reminded me of my own practice in class when we had four of the colourful macs to share in our class.
I really liked the literacy cycles. I'm keen to speak to our teachers who have completed the DFI to see what they think.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
One thing I will use much more effectively is my bookmarks bar. Keeping my most often used tabs there, with or without the names will mean that I won't have my usual 50+ tabs open (which will please quite a few people who are horrified at seeing all my tabs open and are astounded when I can easily find what I need!). I've already added my drive and my blog to the bar.
I will try using the priority box on my drive for the docs I use frequently and change as needed. It is great that I can delete files and change as needed.
I will also try narrowing searches in my drive by using the arrow in the search bar.
I have already added numbers to some of my folders so they are easier to go to in my drive.
Here is a piece of work from today:
Questions I have:
In Google groups is it possible to change the settings so not everyone receives everyone else's responses?
I will try to use the digest setting (?) to see how that works for me, but I don't want to add to my peers' already hefty emails by having my responses going to them too.
How can I have files on my drive in multiple places?
I will try using command Z and see how that goes.
How do I change the default text type in docs from Cambria?
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The importance of collaboration and real time fits really nicely with our maths programme.
I will see how we can use voice typing for journalling.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
The shortcuts are great eg command T is a new tab and command shift T takes me back through each of the tabs I have just closed to find what I want.
I'm looking forward to next week 😀

Ka pai Sheree. You've got some great reflections and interesting questions to think about here. When you select a file you can click shift-z and you'll have the option to add a shortcut to another folder while keeping the file in the original location. I did notice all your tabs yesterday but everyone works differently and it's about finding what works best for you. I'm glad you've already picked up some useful ideas.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Sheree, It was lovely seeing your smiling face on the screen and knowing you were finally getting the opportunity to fill in a few gaps through the DFI- there is nothing like having a few days dedicated to focusing on an aspect of PL! The possibilities that emerge and the wonderings are a result of having time to think.
ReplyDeleteI have quite a collection of literacy cycles developed by teachers over the years if you are interested. And make sure you book time with Phil to go through your questions. They all can be resolved.

Kia Ora Sheree,
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you're already thinking of ways to collaborate, cross-pollinate and connect with other teachers in your school who have completed the DFI.
I found this blog post (https://www.howtogeek.com/434380/how-to-change-the-default-font-in-google-docs/) which will show you how to change your default text.
I'm glad you're looking forward to this weeks DFI. I look forward to following your journey.

That is gold Stef! So obvious, but I never thought to look there!

Thanks for the tip Stef. It worked a treat!
DeleteTēnā koe Sheree,
ReplyDeleteIt was great to connect with you in week one, as I mentioned my colleague Vicki speaks very highly of you. I think at times we all have the 'too many tabs open' issue, so it is great to read that you are taming your tabs. Toby is a great Chrome Extension that can help you group some tabs/sites together, it might be worth a look? I look forward to connecting with you again for week 2 of our DFI kaupapa.
Ngā mihi nui
